Researching possible qualifications in Training and Assessment

Depending on the purpose, you may need to research and decide what qualification option is best for the clients. This may already have been decided, but you need to confirm this. Your knowledge of the specific industry area, as well as the knowledge you will gain/have gained in TAA40104 Certificate IV Training and Assessment about the workplace training and assessment system and the use of Training Packages is critical.

You need to analyse and map the client’s learning and training needs to an existing Training Package qualification or range of endorsed competency standards of registered training organisation.

You may need to work out what competency standard means to the target learning group and their specific learning needs. You may need to explain the competency standards in terms that are more familiar to the client and their industry. This task also needs to be undertaken when the client is internal, for example your own workplace training and assessment organisation or your own TAA40104 Certificate IV Training and Assessment practice environment.
TAA40104 Certificate IV Training and Assessment Activity: Mapping competency standards to a learning need

Choose a unit of competency from the Training Package that is related to your specialist industry.

Interpret the unit in relation to the client’s workplace and operation. List tasks that the learners would be doing in their workplace to demonstrate the specific elements, performance criteria or examples of evidence required for the chosen unit of competency.

Identify the skills the learners should demonstrate while performing the tasks associated with this competency. You will find information in the unit of competency to guide you under the heading: ‘Required skills and attributes’. Consider how these attributes could be covered in a learning program that supports this unit of competency.

Read through the elements and evidence required for the unit of competency. How would you sequence or group information? Include a copy of the unit of competency for your trainer and/or assessor and clearly show on it how you have sequenced the skills, knowledge and attributes covered in the unit.

You could role-play this with your colleagues in order to practice the skill of explaining to a client how the unit forms part of the qualification option that supports the required learning. During the role-play, practice using terms familiar to the client, rather than using workplace training and assessment terminology.
